This study evaluates the impact of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate testing on patient management in an Australian emergency department, finding that while testing is common, clinically significant abnormal results are rare. Out of 33,120 patients, only 5.2% underwent testing, with management changes occurring in just 1.2% of all tests. The findings suggest that the routine testing of these electrolytes may be excessive and should be rationalized to reduce unnecessary healthcare costs.
