derived from a series of lectures organized in 2011-2012 by the Institute of Classical Studies and the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies at the University of London. In a curious yet not entirely surprising way, the strengths of each of individual chapter constitute the weakness of the volume as a whole. Apart from the general theme of classical reception among German writers from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, there is little evidence of any shared theoretical orientation or collective vision. This criticism should not detract from the many merits of the contributions in themselves. On the contrary, the chapters, chronologically arranged and written by an illustrious set of seasoned literary scholars, altogether provide a rich assortment of historical materials, methodological approaches and highly nuanced insights in language that is consistently lucid and compelling. What is lacking is a shared, coherent position, which would have allowed the volume to make a more pronounced and thereby more meaningful intervention in Reception Studies.
