What is Women’s Rights in Authoritarian Egypt about?

During the uprisings of late 2010 and 2011, which took place across the Middle East and North Africa, women made up an important part of the crowds protesting. Women’s rights were central to the demands made. However, despite this, in the ensuing social and political struggles, these rights have not progressed much beyond the situation under previous governments. Hiam Elgousi offers here an examination of the status of women under Egypt’s various authoritarian regimes. Of central importance to the study is how religious scholars have shaped Egyptian society and determined women’s status and rights. The book therefore explores the connections between Islam and Arab culture, but it also identifies the social norms and institutions that support discrimination against women. An historical account of feminism in Egypt is provided and Elgousi examines Egyptian family law and women’s reproductive rights.
