The poem is an elegy for Arthur the orangutan who lived in the forest with his family until humans moved into the area with spears and clubs, taking over his home and leaving him and his family without food or shelter. Arthur eventually outlived his young and was taken alone to a zoo, where he was kept in a cage and put on display every Sunday. Years passed as Arthur turned from orange to grey, until he was finally reunited with his family in death.
