The synthesis of red blood cells (RBCs), also known as erythropoiesis, is a complex process that takes place primarily in the bone marrow. It begins with hematopoietic stem cells differentiating into erythroid progenitor cells, which then develop into proerythroblasts. The proerythroblasts accumulate hemoglobin and mature into reticulocytes, before being released from the bone marrow into circulation as fully mature RBCs. RBCs then circulate for around 120 days performing oxygen transport before being broke
