What is Inevitable Peace about?

Through an interpretation of Immanuel Kant's On Perpetual Peace, this book traces the idea of universal order under law. Kant was a political rather than a religious or metaphysical philosopher, with a clear vision of one world. For Kant, the will to peace was a moral imperative, inherent in the rational law of nature, even if human experience found frequent war a part of actual history. War is natural, but incompatible with moral law, because war prevents man from pursuing his essential tasks and duties. Therefore, it is imperative that civilized nations act as if war can be circumvented. The book concludes that the historian who believes that human nature is unchanging and posits that war is unavoidable is guilty of violating the Kantian ethos which equates moral law with the inevitability of peace.
