What is Rangappa vs. S. Mohan: Legal Memorandum about?

Rangappa had loaned Mohan Rs. 45,000 in cash in 1998. In 2001, Mohan issued a post-dated cheque for the amount, which was later dishonored. Rangappa filed a case against Mohan. Mohan argues that [1] the cheque was issued as a security deposit, not to repay a legally enforceable debt, so Section 138 does not apply, and [2] he had already repaid the loan in cash, so he is not liable to repay any amount. Rangappa contends that Mohan is liable under Section 138 for dishonoring the cheque.
