What is Thrombosis in Pregnancy about?

Thromboembolism (venous and arterial) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality during pregnancy [1], along with hemorrhage. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are major risk factors of thrombosis. Other major risk factors include cancer, immobility, hormonal therapy, and surgery [2]. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported pulmonary embolism (PE) as a leading cause of death in pregnancy in the United States between 1991 and 1999. Twenty percent of maternal deaths were due to PE, which is considerably more common than gestational vascular diseases (GVDs), postpartum hemorrhage, and infections [3]. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), PE, and arterial thrombosis events is increased during pregnancy. The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in pregnancy is fourfold higher than in the nonpregnant state. The prevalence of VTE in pregnancy is 1.72 per 1000 pregnancies and the majority of the thrombotic events are venous (80%) in origin. The risk for VTE is the highest during the postpartum period: about 50-fold compared with the nonpregnant period.
