Benzene diazonium chloride is prepared from phenylamine by treating it with nitrous acid and hydrochloric acid below 10°C. It undergoes substitution reactions where the diazonium group is replaced, or coupling reactions where the nitrogen atoms are retained to form azo compounds. It can be hydrolyzed with water above 10°C to form phenol, or treated with potassium iodide solution to form iodobenzene. It can also couple with phenol in alkaline solution below 10°C to form an azo-dye.
