What is Changing Medical Practice Through Technology Assessment: An Evaluation Of The Nih Consensus Development Program (a Rand Corporation Research Study) about?
Like other methods of medical technology assessment, consensus conferences are aimed at four broad objectives: (1) promoting the timely incorporation of beneficial medical innovations into clinical practice; (2) encouraging the abandonment of obsolete technologies in favor of ones that are safer or more efficacious; (3) discouraging the adoption of technologies that have little value; and (4) informing public policy choices that encourage or discourage certain medical technologies (e.g., choices about whether to provide third-party reimbursement for those technologies). This evaluation study examines the effects that the Consensus Development Program has had on physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices. It assesses how well the program has met its communication objectives and makes practical recommendations for how its effectiveness might be increased
