Kollam district in Kerala has varied topography ranging from coastal areas to highlands in the eastern parts. It has an area of 2491 sq km and is drained by three main rivers - Achenkovil, Kallada, and Ithikara which flow westwards. The largest freshwater body is the Sasthamkotta Lake while the largest wetland ecosystem is the Ashtamudi Kayal which covers an area of 64,000 hectares and has eight prominent arms.
