What is Colonial History of Tanzania about?

Colonial rule over what is now Tanzania began in the late 19th century when Germany conquered the region and incorporated it into German East Africa. In 1919 after World War I, Germany lost control of the region and it was divided between Britain, Belgium, and Portugal under League of Nations mandates. Tanzania remained under British colonial control until 1961 when it gained independence under its first prime minister, Julius Nyerere, after his political party TANU campaigned for sovereignty.
