What is Discussion: The forward search: Theory and data analysis about?
We congratulate Atkinson, Riani and Cerioli for having so clearly condensed in these pages many aspects of the Forward Search approach to data analysis. We appreciate the principled exposition and the didactic examples used to convey the key concepts. We are especially honoured to read a full section dedicated to the statistical problems that we are facing at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in the analysis of international trade data. We have been experimenting with robust statistics for several years, in relation to problems (anti-fraud) where the outliers are the ultimate target of the analysis and are not just treated as observations to avoid producing sensible estimates. Thus, we have found especially intriguing the idea of monitoring how individual observations or groups of observations affect a model by means of a ''Forward Search'' through the data. In our applications, where trade values are simply regressed on the corresponding volume of trade, it is often sufficient to examine the impact of an observation on a given fit with the traditional approach of deletion diagnostics.
