What is Towards the End about?
"Towards the End" is the story of Paul Robinson from his final days at school in a small Lanarkshire town, through his first job in a bank, to his attempts to find companionship in the Glaswegian gay scene. It centres on his first relationship with Alex, an older colleague from the bank who seems able to play the double game with ease. Their affair is under continual strain, their bond is essentially physical. Love remains an unspoken word between them, while Alex has a wife to consider, and Paul has yet to tell his parents . . . Paul's narrative is both poignant and reflective. It arises from the margin of Scottish urban experience, where choice of lifestyle is limited by prejudice and precedent. From this viewpoint, he observes the shallow pretence of those around him — yet he allows others to dictate the roles he must perform. As the dangers of relinquishing control become apparent, Paul discovers the fragility of all human relationships: those of his family and friends, of his neighbours and workmates.
