Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsica in 1769 to a minor noble family. He rose through the ranks of the French military during the French Revolution and became a highly successful general. In 1804, he crowned himself Emperor of France. As emperor, he instituted reforms and expanded French territory through military victories. However, his invasion of Russia in 1812 ended in disaster. After being defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, he was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in
