This article discusses the status of influenza A virus infection in animal species in Indonesia before the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in poultry in 2003. A retrospective study tested 1529 animal sera samples from 8 species in 12 provinces for influenza A virus antibodies and isolated viruses from 134 pig lung samples. The study found no evidence of influenza A virus infection in the animal species sampled prior to the 2003 H5N1 outbreak in poultry in Indonesia.
