The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was a magnitude 9.1-9.3 earthquake that caused a series of devastating tsunamis, killing over 230,000 people across fourteen countries. It was one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded and triggered other quakes as far away as Alaska. Similarly, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake of magnitude 9.0 off the coast of Japan generated extremely destructive tsunami waves up to 40 meters tall and caused a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima power plant complex.
