This document summarizes a study of the electrodeposition of platinum from a hexachloroplatinic acid bath. Voltammograms show multiple cathodic waves during platinum deposition, but it is shown that they all result from the reduction of Pt(IV) to Pt(0), with no evidence of Pt(II) as an intermediate. The multiple waves arise from kinetically inert chlorine/water complexes of hexachloroplatinic acid in solution.
