What is Eric Linklater : a critical biography about?

Eric Linklater was the author of several bestselling novels and a major contributor to the British war effort through his factual military writing for the Ministry of Information and his unique radio 'conversations' for the BBC. He was a hero in his own right - shot in the head in France in 1918 and on active service guarding Scapa Flow from Day One of World War II. He was also phenomenally well-travelled - India, China and, later, even Korea during the war there. Ideal subject for a biography then - except for the fact that Linklater wrote three volumes of autobiography himself, all three highly readable (if, in the case of Volume One, not 100% reliable, though again Linklater corrects everything in Volume Three). What Michael Parnell adds to the mix is the critical element. Linklater's novels are scrutinised in considerable depth.
