What is Brainstem and Cranial Nerve Territories about?
The brainstem is a cylindrical structure longitudinally situated in the posterior cranial fossa, and is formed of the midbrain (mesencephalon), pons, and medulla oblongata from rostral to caudal. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves. Among these, the first, second and eighth cranial nerves serve special sensory functions as olfaction, vision and audio-vestibular function, respectively. All of the remaining cranial nerves contain motor nerve fibers innervating the skeletal muscles, and the fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth cranial nerves also contain somatosensory nerve fibers. Furthermore, the third, seventh, ninth and tenth cranial nerves also contain autonomic nerve fibers.
