The fresh fruit of California buckeye, Aesculus californica \*was separated into husk, seed coat and endosperm. The chemical analyses exhibited differences in each part. Arbutin was isolated only from the endosperm, (-)-epicatechin from the seed coat and saponins from the husk. Hydroquinone was found to be an artifact of arbutin origin.
