Shāh Walī Allāh was an 18th century Indian theologian who attempted to modernize Islamic theology. He received a traditional Islamic education as a child and studied with eminent scholars. He sought to harmonize Islamic ideals with changing social conditions in India by allowing independent reasoning and reinterpreting theological concepts. His most famous work was Asrār al-dīn. He aimed to restore the former splendor of the Muslim community through religious reform.
