The study of the infrared spectra of methyl mycolates of Mycobacteria, Nocardia and Corynebacteria allows the assignment of the threo configuration at the asymmetric centers 2 and 3 of these compounds. It is shown that the pre-a-mycolic acids from the Test strain are the diastereoisomers of a-mycolic acids and consequently have the erythro configuration. The ct-and pre-ct-methyl mycolates are interconvertible by alkali treatment.
