What is Adjunctive Rehabilitative Interventions about?
Adjunctive rehabilitative interventions are supplemental treatments incorporated into osteoarthritis (OA) management plans to support first-line core treatments following individual patient assessment. This module highlights the recommendations discussed across clinical practice guidelines curated by international organizations, including but not limited to the OA Research Society International, American College of Rheumatology, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Although most adjunctive treatments are recommended by at least one guideline, notable inconsistencies exist, generating debate among health care providers about their use and effectiveness. Recommendation inconsistencies are driven by a lack of knowledge or limited study availability; however, new evidence continues to evolve our understanding of these treatments and their application in clinical practice. The proposed intervention mechanisms, risks, benefits, and recommendations for each adjunctive intervention are summarized and patient characteristics for individualized prescription are discussed for knee, hip, and hand OA where appropriate.
