The treaty sealed on 19 March 1277 between Michael Palaeologos and the Venetian Republic contained a clause on reparations: "Furthermore, that Our Empire shall see that restitution be made in accordance with the form of the first truce to Venetians who have been robbed, and to whom no damages have been paid for robbery or loss inflicted upon them by men of Our Empire, from the time that the truce began until now, including customs-dues taken by men of Our Empire." 2 There are difficulties about the wording 'in accordance with the form of the first truce'. It seems indisputable that the 'first truce 5 is the five-year agreement sealed on 4 April 1268. But nowhere in that treaty is there a clause entitling Venetians to reparations. We are left with three possibilities, each of which is rather unsatisfactory: (a) The words 'in accordance with the form of the first truce' refer to the 1268 clause which bound the Venetians to compensate the Emperor's subjects for depredations committed by Venetian corsairs. (b) The original five-year truce, expiring in 1273, had been extended for at least part of the time between then and 1277, s is expressly stated by the preamble to the 1277 text. It
