What is Q-switched and Gain-switched Mid-infrared Fluoride Glass Fiber Lasers about?

## 1 Q-switched fiber lasers Pulsed versions of fiber lasers operating at the 3 μm waveband of the mid-infrared have attracted increased attention in the past decade due to their significant demand in a wide range of applications, for example, surgery, material processing, remote sensing, infrared countermeasures, etc. [1-6]. There are three main methods in realizing pulse laser operation for the attainment of short pulses. One is mode-locking, which is discussed in detail in Chapter 11, gain-switching which is discussed in the following section and, Q-switching, the subject of this section. Q-switching is one of the most widely used methods to generate nanosecond to millisecond-scale optical pulse with high pulse energy, and has therefore been paid particular attention . In the technique of Q-switching, energy is stored in the amplifying medium by optical pumping, while the cavity Q is lowered to prevent the onset of laser emission. Although the energy stored and the gain in the active medium are high, the cavity losses are also high and lasing action is prohibited.
