When the contacts open in a vacuum chamber, the metallic vapors and ions produced by the arc rapidly condense on the contact surfaces, allowing the dielectric strength to quickly recover and extinguish the arc. Vacuum circuit breakers are reliable, have low maintenance needs, and produce no fire or gas hazards compared to other circuit breaker types.
