The optimization of the grafting of a cationic polymer onto cellulose has been investigated in order to establish the conditions for the synthesis of cellulose graft cationic copolymers with a low percent of grafting (<10%). Two matrices have been used. The Hadamard matrix gave evidence of the importance of several factors and the fractional factorial matrix showed the in ̄uence of other parameters not disclosed in the ®rst experimental design. So from both matrices the signi®cant parameters that have major eects on the response (percent of grafting) have been deduced.
