What is Herpes Simplex Virus in Periodontitis Study about?

Subgingival samples were collected from 11 patients diagnosed with chronic generalized periodontitis and tested for Herpes simplex virus (HSV) via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). 3 patients had moderate disease while 8 had severe disease. PCR did not detect HSV-1 or HSV-2 DNA in any of the samples, conflicting with previous studies suggesting HSV may play a pathogenic role in periodontitis. This small pilot study questions the proposed role and clinical relevance of herpes viruses in chronic periodontitis.
