About this document
Understanding Hieroglyphics Basics by Rolls Genesis Charles is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Hieroglyphic writing uses symbols to represent sounds rather than letters. Some symbols represented single sounds, while others combined to make consonant-vowel combinations. Determinatives, or extra symbols added to words, provided context about word meaning. Vowels were often omitted, so the meaning had to be determined from context. Certain sounds in English, like "th", were not used in ancient Egyptian.
