Shell has developed an ultra-low sulfur fuel oil (ULSFO 0.1%S max) to meet new sulfur emission regulations for ships. The fuel underwent sea trials and was shown to run successfully in main and auxiliary engines, with benefits like reduced risk of thermal shock during fuel switches. The ULSFO has a viscosity suitable for main engines, good ignition properties, and will be available in late 2014 in key ports with broader availability in 2015.
