The Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986 caused widespread radioactive contamination. A hastily constructed sarcophagus was built to contain the damaged reactor. In 2003, construction began on a new safe confinement structure - a huge arch-shaped steel structure - to replace the aging sarcophagus.
