Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963 to over 250,000 people. The speech called for an end to racism and a fulfillment of the promise of equality and justice for all. It began by discussing the Emancipation Proclamation but noted African Americans were still not truly free 100 years later. King spoke of the American ideals of equality and justice in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence as unfulfilled promises for black people.
