This document describes potassium tert-butoxide-promoted acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles to generate N-heteroarenes and hydrogen gas under transition-metal-free conditions. Various N-heterocyclic compounds were efficiently dehydrogenated to the corresponding N-heteroarenes and H2 gas using KOtBu base in o-xylene at 140 °C. Screening of reaction conditions identified KOtBu as the most effective base promoter for this acceptorless dehydrogenation.
