About this document
Overjustification Effect in Children by Carolina Berwanger is a document available to read on EtoBox.
A study tested the "overjustification hypothesis" that intrinsic interest in an activity can decrease when a person is induced to do the activity for an explicit extrinsic reward. Children showing initial intrinsic interest in an activity were placed in one of three conditions: expected reward, unexpected reward, or no reward. Those in the expected reward condition showed less subsequent intrinsic interest than those in the other conditions, supporting the hypothesis.
