Jose Rizal was a Filipino novelist and physician in the late 19th century who pursued his medical education in Spain. While there, he joined the Propaganda Movement advocating for reforms in the Spanish colonial administration of the Philippines, including equal treatment of Filipinos and limiting the power of Catholic friars. He published two novels, Noli Me Tangere and its sequel El Filibusterismo, which detailed the abuses of Spanish colonial rule and were subsequently banned in the Philippines. Rizal so
