What is Enhanced Swelling in Alginate Superabsorbents about?

This document describes a study that synthesized a novel sodium alginate-based superabsorbent composite with enhanced swelling properties. The composite was made by simultaneously grafting acrylic acid, styrene, and attapulgite onto sodium alginate backbones. The maximum swelling ratio of the composite was 587 g/g in water and 73 g/g in saline solution. The introduction of styrene and attapulgite not only enhanced the swelling ratio but also increased the initial swelling rate compared to a sodium alginate
