Ferdinand Verbiest was a Jesuit missionary born in 1623 in Belgium who contributed greatly to science and the spread of the gospel in China. He entered the Society of Jesus and became skilled in many languages and subjects like mathematics and astronomy. In China, he achieved peace in the Chinese church, improved astronomy, and constructed scientific instruments while spreading the gospel. Unfortunately, he fell off his horse in 1688 and died at age 65.
