What is Who Is a Wise Person? Zhuangzi and Epistemological Discussions of Wisdom about?
## I. Contemporary Epistemological Debates on Wisdom A lively debate on the nature of the wise person has emerged over the last decade. Understandably, some of the accounts proposed require further development. What it is to be wise, however, is also a long-debated topic in many ancient philosophical traditions. The focus of the present essay is not on making a case against an existing position in the literature, but instead on facilitating scholarly engagement between literatures. It proposes that the discussion of epistemic humility in the Zhuangzi, a fourth century B.C.E. text, makes an important contribution to the contemporary epistemological discussion of wisdom. There is agreement in the contemporary epistemological debate that the wise person is doing well epistemically in some respect. A main point of discussion in this debate concerns precisely how well the wise person is doing. Theorists have proposed epistemic standings that include a wide variety of justified beliefs (Sharon Ryan 2012), knowledge (Grimm 2015), and understanding (Shane Ryan 2016, Sharon Ryan 2020).
