There are four main types of three-phase transformer connections: star-star, delta-delta, star-delta, and delta-star. Star-star connections are economical for low current applications but the neutral must be earthed. Delta-delta connections are suitable for high current applications and allow for open-delta operation. Star-delta and delta-star connections provide a 30 degree phase shift and are used where voltage needs to be stepped up or down between transmission and generation systems.
