The Dominican Republic occupies about two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, making it the second largest country in the Caribbean by area after Cuba. It has a population of around 10 million people and shares the western portion of Hispaniola with Haiti. The Dominican Republic was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and was home to the first European settlement in the Americas, Santo Domingo.
