A grooved disc oil skimmer developed by Elastec/American Marine won an oil spill cleanup competition by recovering over 4,600 gallons of oil per minute with 89.5% efficiency. The skimmer uses rotating grooved discs to separate oil from water through surface tension and capillary effects. A commercial version called the X150 is scheduled for launch in 2013 and can recover 150 cubic meters of oil per hour.
