The Supreme Court ruled that evidence against a defendant was inadmissible because the arresting officer failed to immediately inventory and photograph illegal drugs as mandated by law. Specifically, the officer only signed his initials on the drugs at the police precinct rather than at the arrest site. This compromised the integrity of the evidence and broke the chain of custody. As a result, the Court acquitted the defendant of drug possession charges.
