1) EDTA is a hexaprotic acid that exists in different forms depending on the pH. The Y4- form predominates at pH above 10.17. 2) The formation of Ca2+ and Y4- to form CaY2- is represented by an equilibrium constant (Kf). Increasing acidity favors protonation of Y4- over complex formation. 3) The concentration of free Ca2+ can be calculated using Kf, pH, and the concentrations of EDTA forms based on equilibrium equations. The fraction of each EDTA form varies with pH.
