The history of Maharashtra spans several centuries and dynasties. Ancient kingdoms like the Mauryas ruled the region from the 3rd century BC. In later centuries, the region was controlled by the Satvahans, Vatakas, Kalacuris, Chalukyas, Yadavas, Hoysalas, Kakatiyas and Muslim rulers like the Delhi Sultanate and Bahmani Sultanate. In the 17th century, the Maratha empire was established under the leadership of Shivaji, controlling a large area. The British later took control of the region in the 19th century.
