What is Bernard Ashmole, 1894-1988 about?
## JOHN BOARDMAN Bernard Ashmole was elected an Honorary Member of the Archaeological Institute of America in 1940. His death, at the age of 93, on 25 February 1988, deprived Classical art history of one of its senior figures of the 20th century, an acknowledged authority on Classical sculpture and a teacher whose influence went far beyond those who enjoyed personal contact with him. His academic career was divided between work for museums, for the British Schools overseas, and teaching. It began in Rome, working with Stuart Jones on the catalogue of sculptures in the Conservatori Museum. After a short period in the Coin Room of the Ashmolean Museum (he was remotely related to its 17thcentury founder), he returned to the British School at Rome as its Director, from 1925 to 1928. This was followed by a long period of service as Yates Professor of Archaeology in the University of London, a post he held until 1948. He had already been appointed Keeper of the Greek and Roman Department in the British Museum in 1939, a difficult period in its history just after an exaggerated scandal over the Elgin Marbles, and after the war he was engaged in planning the reinstatement of the collection
