New York is poised to become the first state to require hospitals to aggressively screen for sepsis to begin treatment sooner in response to the death of a 12-year-old boy from sepsis. Sepsis is a leading cause of death that often progresses quickly to organ failure if not treated early, and guidelines have been shown to significantly reduce mortality when implemented. The new regulations will also require hospitals to publicly report results of their sepsis screening and treatment efforts.
