Armature reaction is the effect of armature flux produced by armature current on the distribution of the main flux in a DC machine. When the generator is excited but not loaded, the main flux is symmetrically distributed above and below the pole axis. However, when load is applied, armature current flows and produces armature flux at right angles to the main flux, distorting the magnetic field.
