The Auditorium Building in Chicago, designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler in the 1880s, was an innovative building that served both commercial and civic functions. Due to soft soil conditions, it featured a massive raft foundation of timber and concrete. The building had to accommodate both a large theater and hotel/office spaces. The theater interior featured perfect acoustics and one of the first electric lighting designs. Both the exterior and interior incorporated Romanesque architectural styles
