The respiratory system is responsible for gas exchange between the body and the environment. It consists of the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The lungs are the primary organs of respiration where oxygen passes from the air into the blood and carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the air through a process called external respiration.
